How to shrink a drive or create new volume using Windows Disk Management

Shrinking a drive using Windows Disk Management is a straightforward process. You can create a batch script or simply follow these steps manually. Here's a step-by-step guide to shrinking a drive using Windows Disk Management:

Open Disk Management:

  • Press Win + X and select "Disk Management" from the menu
  • Alternatively, you can right-click on the "This PC" (or "My Computer") icon, select "Manage," and then click on "Disk Management" under the "Storage" category.

In windows 11 you can right-click on the "This PC" (or "My Computer") icon, select "show more option," then click on "manage" and then click on "Disk Management" under the "Storage" category.

Locate the Drive to Shrink:

  • In the lower section of the Disk Management window, you'll see a list of drives and their partitions. Find the drive you want to shrink.

Shrink the Drive:

  • Right-click on the partition you want to shrink (usually labeled "C:" or "D:") and select "Shrink Volume."

Specify the Amount to Shrink:

  • In the "Shrink" window, you'll see the total size before and after the shrink operation. Enter the amount you want to shrink the partition by in MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) in the "Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB" field.
  • Windows will automatically suggest the maximum amount you can shrink. You can either use this suggested value or enter a smaller value based on your needs.

Complete the Shrink Operation:

Click the "Shrink" button.

Confirm the Shrink Operation:

  • You'll now see the partition size reduced and unallocated space created next to it

Initiate the New Simple Volume Wizard:

  • Right-click on the unallocated space, and select "New Simple Volume."

Welcome to the New Simple Volume Wizard:

  • Click "Next" on the welcome page.

Specify Volume Size (Partition Size):

  • Enter the size you want for the new partition in megabytes (1 GB = 1024 MB) in the "Simple volume size in MB" field.
  • Click "Next."

Assign Drive Letter or Path:

  • Choose a drive letter for the new partition or use the one assigned by Windows.
  • You can also choose to mount the partition into an empty NTFS folder.
  • Click "Next."

Format Partition:

  • Choose a file system (usually NTFS) for the new partition.
  • Assign a volume label (optional) to help identify the partition.
  • You can perform a "Quick Format" for faster setup.
  • Click "Next."

Completing the New Simple Volume Wizard:

  • Review your selections in the summary.
  • Click "Finish" to create the new simple volume.

Confirmation:

  • After the process is complete, you'll see a confirmation message.

Your new simple volume is now created and available in Windows Explorer with the drive letter and label you specified.

Please note that the availability of certain options may depend on your Windows version, and you may need administrative privileges to create new volumes. Additionally, be cautious when creating partitions, as it involves changes to your disk structure.
